South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “US slams China after Hong Kong convicts Jimmy Lai, Martin Lee, and five other protest leaders” – below is their description.
US officials slammed China’s communist government after seven prominent Hong Kong opposition figures were convicted on April 1, 2021, for organising and taking part in an unauthorised anti-government protest in 2019. US State Department spokesman Ned Price said the “politically motivated charges” show that Beijing seeks to crush all forms of peaceful dissent in Hong Kong. Media tycoon Jimmy Lai and six former lawmakers including Lee Cheuk-yan, Margaret Ng Ngoi-yee, Leung Kwok-hung, Cyd Ho, Albert Ho and Martin Lee were found guilty of leading a procession on August 18, 2019. The march took place during months of protests in the city sparked by a now-withdrawn extradition bill.
