US President Joe Biden said he is committed to militarily defend Taiwan. At a press conference in Japan on May 23, 2022, Biden was asked if the US was willing to defend the self-ruled island given Washington’s decision not to be involved in the Ukraine-Russia war. Biden replied, “Yes, that’s the commitment we made”. China has hit back, warning the US to be “careful with your words”.

Taiwan is claimed by the PRC, which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognise the ROC. Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 14 out of 193 UN member states and the Holy See.
Ukraine is a large country in Eastern Europe known for its Orthodox churches, Black Sea coastline and forested mountains. Its capital, Kiev, features the gold-domed St. Sophia’s Cathedral, with 11th-century mosaics and frescoes. Overlooking the Dnieper River is the Kiev Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, a Christian pilgrimage site housing Scythian tomb relics and catacombs containing mummified Orthodox monks.
