Joe Biden has become the first US president to formally recognise the mass killing of Armenians during the Ottoman Empire as an act of “genocide”.

Biden said his intention is not to cast blame but to ensure it never happens again.

And in Turkey, Turkish officials lashed out, summoning the US ambassador to lodge a protest.

Turkey has fiercely denied the mass killings of nearly 1.5 million Armenian men, women and children was an act of genocide, saying the deaths were the result of warfare.

Al Jazeera’s Rob Reynolds reports from Montebello, California.
