In an interview with FRANCE 24, David Schenker, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, discussed the situation in Libya and the involvement of foreign forces like Turkey and Russia in the conflict there. “We think it’s important that the arms embargo be implemented immediately,” he told FRANCE 24. Schenker warned that the Libyan conflict “could spin out of control if the Russians choose to escalate further”. The top US official also discussed the situation in Iraq, Iran and Lebanon, as well as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The sovereign state is made of three historical regions: Tripolitania, Fezzan and Cyrenaica. The largest city and capital, Tripoli, is located in western Libya and contains over three million of Libya’s seven million people. The second-largest city is Benghazi, which is located in eastern Libya.

The Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991 and since 1993 Russia been governed as a federal semi-presidential republic. Russia is a major great power, with the world’s second-most powerful military, and the fourth-highest military expenditure. As a recognised nuclear-weapon state, the country possesses the world’s largest stockpile of nuclear weapons.
Turkey, officially the Republic of Turkey, is a transcontinental country located mainly on the Anatolian Peninsula in Western Asia, with a smaller portion on the Balkan Peninsula in Southeastern Europe.
Istanbul, which straddles Europe and Asia, is the country’s largest city, while Ankara is the capital. The majority of the population identifies as Turkish, around 20% identify as Kurdish.
