U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Justice Department are expected to announce policy initiatives on Friday to help deter and confront hate crimes, as well as bias-related incidents.

This follows the mass shooting that took place in Buffalo, N.Y. last Saturday,

Payton Gendron, 18-year-old white teenager, has been accused of opening fire with a semi-automatic rifle in a predominantly Black neighbourhood of Buffalo.

Authorities say he carried out an act of “racially motivated violent extremism” at the Tops Friendly Market, when he shot 13 people. A total of 10 people died and three were injured. The teenager has been jailed without bail on a charge of first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty.
