Global News published this video item, entitled “US election: Biden names Merrick Garland as pick for attorney general” – below is their description.
U.S. president-elect Joe Biden named Merrick Garland, currently the chief judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, as his pick for attorney general of the United States. During an announcement about his key Justice Department nominees, Biden stressed that his nominees would not work for him and their loyalty is to the law, the Constitution, and the “people of this nation.
Garland, speaking after being named, choked up when discussing Department of Justice policies created in the wake of the Richard Nixon administration and pledged to “reaffirm those policies as the principles upon which the department operates,” referring to the importance of the independence of the department. He said he would not have agreed to be considered for the role had Biden not pledged to ensure its independence.
The judge was former president Barack Obama’s pick to fill former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s seat when he died in 2016, but Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to consider the nomination, stating that as it was an election year and the winner of the presidential election should name Scalia’s replacement.
Biden also announced Lisa Monaco as deputy attorney general, Vanita Gupta as associate attorney general and Kristen Clarke as assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division.
