A new U.S. Congress convened on Sunday in an atmosphere of political uncertainty, with Senate control undecided, a smaller Democratic majority in the House of Representatives and a Republican fight looming over presidential election results.

The 117th U.S. Congress convened with the swearing-in of newly-elected and returning senators.

Newly-elected senators included Tennessee Republican Bill Hagerty, Colorado Democrat John Hickenlooper, New Mexico Democrat Ben Ray Lujan, Wyoming Republican Cynthia Lummis, Kansas Republican Roger Marshall, Alabama Republican Tommy Tuberville and Arizona Democrat Mark Kelly.

A pair of runoff elections later this week in Georgia will determine whether Democrats or Republicans control the Senate this term.
