Us blasts russian invasion, nuclear threats as 'barbaric'

Bloomberg Quicktake: Now published this video item, entitled “US Blasts Russian Invasion, Nuclear Threats as ‘Barbaric'” – below is their description.

U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm gave a damning speech about Russia at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) annual conference in Vienna on Monday.

Speaking to the gathered delegations, Granholm delivered several messages from U.S. President Joe Biden, referencing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as “barbaric,” “brutal” and “reckless.”

Granholm went on to state that strengthening the security around nuclear development and materials was paramount to Biden’s administration.

“The United States is committed to working with partners worldwide to secure these materials and further reduce the threats of nuclear and radiological terrorism,” she said.

Granholm also claimed Russia’s “overt” threats to use nuclear weapons against Europe and their seizing of Ukrainian nuclear facilities cast doubt on the country’s reliability within the nuclear world.

Granholm finished by stating the U.S.’s support of the “government and people of Ukraine” and suggested countries held “hostage” by their need for Russian energy supplies should look to expand nuclear power as an alternative.

Many European countries including Germany, have suffered recent issues after Russia delayed and stopped the flow of various energy supplies.

In This Story: Nuclear Weapons

A nuclear weapon (also called an atom bomb, nuke, atomic bomb, nuclear warhead, A-bomb, or nuclear bomb) is an explosive device that derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions, either fission (fission bomb) or from a combination of fission and fusion reactions (thermonuclear bomb). Both bomb types release large quantities of energy from relatively small amounts of matter.

A nuclear device no larger than traditional bombs can devastate an entire city by blast, fire, and radiation. Since they are weapons of mass destruction, the proliferation of nuclear weapons is a focus of international relations policy.
