South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “University of Hong Kong removes ‘Pillar of Shame’ sculpture marking Tiananmen crackdown” – below is their description.
The Pillar of Shame sculpture at the University of Hong Kong was removed on the night of December 22, 2021. The artwork commemorates victims of the Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989, when protesters demanded greater democracy and government transparency. The statue had been on loan to the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China, the group that organised the annual Tiananmen Square candlelight vigil. The group disbanded in September after coming under investigation by national security police. HKU ordered the statue’s removal in October, citing legal risks associated with the group’s disbandment.
