At the meeting of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) today (21 Jan), WHO Director-General Dr Tedros welcomed the pledge that the United States will remain a member of WHO.
Via a video link, Dr Anthony S. Fauci announced that “the United States will remain a member of the World Health Organization,” adding that “yesterday, President Biden signed letters retracting the previous Administration’s announcement to withdraw from the organization.”
Dr Fauci also said “the United States also intends to fulfill its financial obligations to the organization.”
He reiterated that the United States “sees technical collaboration at all levels as a fundamental part of our relationship with WHO, one that we value deeply and will look to strengthen going forward.”
The President’s chief medical adviser announced that the United States “plans to work multilaterally to respond to and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Dr Fauci said, “President Biden will issue a directive later today which will include the intent of the U.S. to join COVAX and support the ACT-Accelerator to advance multilateral efforts for COVID-19 vaccine, therapeutic, and diagnostic distribution, equitable access, and research and development.”
In a statement issued Wednesday (20 Jan), UN Secretary-General António Guterres also welcomed the United States’ stated re-engagement with the World Health Organization, stating that supporting the WHO is absolutely critical to the world’s efforts for a better coordinated response against COVID-19.
