United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is calling for an immediate end to the rising escalations between Israel and Hamas.

The spokesperson for Guterres Stéphane Dujarric read a statement Tuesday in which the UN chief calls the tensions and violence concerning, asking for the “spiraling escalation” to cease immediately.

“He is deeply saddened to learn of the increasingly large numbers of casualties, including children from Israeli airstrikes in Gaza and of Israeli fatalities from rockets launched from Gaza,” read Dujarric.

“The United Nations is working with all relevant parties to de-escalate the situation urgently,” he continued.

Sparked by weeks of tensions in contested Jerusalem, Israel unleashed new airstrikes on Gaza on Tuesday, killing a number of militants and civilians.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu followed by saying Israel will intensify strikes against militants in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, militants barraged southern Israel with hundreds of rockets, killing two Israelis.

Gaza health officials said 28 Palestinians had been killed in Gaza, most by airstrikes, since sundown Monday.

The Israeli military said at least 16 of the dead were militants. Two women were killed by rockets fired from Gaza that hit their homes in the southern city of Ashkelon — the first Israeli deaths in the current violence.

The barrage of rockets leaving Gaza and airstrikes coming into the territory have continued almost non-stop throughout the day.
