United Kingdom on Iran – Security Council Media Stakeout (6 August 2021)

United Nations published this video item, entitled “United Kingdom on Iran – Security Council Media Stakeout (6 August 2021)” – below is their description.

Informal comments to the media by Barbara Woodward, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations on the situation regarding the attack on the MV Mercer Street vessel.

The United Kingdom’s Ambassador, Barbara Woodward, today (6 Aug) told reporters that “the UK knows that Iran was responsible” for the attack against the MV Mercer Street vessel, operated by an Israeli-owned firm, off the coast of Oman last week, killing a British national and a Romanian citizen.

Talking to reporters outside the Security Council, Woodward said, “we know it was deliberate and targeted. There is no justification for what happened: a state-sanctioned attack on a civilian vessel passing peacefully through international waters. Tragically, two civilians, a Romanian and a British citizen, died as a result of Iran’s disregard for international law.”

The UK Ambassador said, “the evidence, we are confident – based on our assessment of the debris that was recovered from the MV Mercer Street – that the system used in the attack was an Iranian Shahed-136 UAV, and these are manufactured only in Iran.”

Following her intervention, Iranian Ambassador Zahra Ershadi said, “we just heard a distorted statement about the Mercer Street vessel incident. Let me say a few words about it. First, our thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their loved ones in that unfortunate incident. Immediately following this event, Israeli officials accused Iran of the incident. This is what they usually do. It is a standard practice of the Israeli regime. Its aim is to divert attention of the world public opinion from the regime’s crimes and inhuman practices. In the region.”

Iran, also called Persia, officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, is a country in Western Asia. Its central location in Eurasia and proximity to the Strait of Hormuz give it significant geostrategic importance. Tehran is the capital and largest city.

Iran is home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations, beginning with the formation of the Elamite kingdoms in the fourth millennium BC. The Iranian Revolution established the current Islamic Republic in 1979.

Iran’s political system combines elements of a presidential democracy and an Islamic theocracy. Iran is a founding member of the UN, ECO, OIC, and OPEC. It is a major regional and middle power and has large reserves of fossil fuels — including the world’s largest natural gas supply and the third largest proven oil reserves.

The country’s rich cultural legacy is reflected in part by its 22 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Historically a multi-ethnic country, Iran remains a pluralistic society comprising numerous ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups, the largest being Persians, Azeris, Kurds, Mazandaranis and Lurs.
