United Nations published this video item, entitled “United Kingdom on Darfur – Security Council Media Stakeout (27 April 2022)” – below is their description.
Informal remarks by James Kariuki, Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations, on the latest violence in Darfur, in his national capacity.
United Kingdom Ambassador James Kariuki today (27 Apr) told reporters that violence is increasing in Darfur, adding that “this is the second time in five months that the Kreinik town has seen a deadly wave of attacks.”
Speaking outside the Security Council on his national capacity after a meeting on the situation in Darfur, Kariuki said, “The violence is preventing humanitarian aid getting to those in need.”
The British diplomat noted that OCHA had had to suspend food distribution in West Darfur, affecting at least 62,000 displaced people.
Kariuki added, “We take note of the response of the Sudanese authorities, but without serious investment in local peacebuilding and justice, a unified security presence, disarmament and land reform, we worry the gains made by years of investing in peace could be quickly reversed.”
