China’s President Xi Jinping promised carbon neutrality by 2060 during his United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) remarks Tuesday. Xi says China will aim to stop pumping additional carbon dioxide, the main global warming gas.The Chinese president’s announcement is a significant step for the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases. Calling for a “green revolution,” Xi said the coronavirus pandemic had shown the need to preserve the environment. “Humankind can no longer afford to ignore the repeated warnings of nature,” he said. Citing the Paris Agreement that he and former U.S. President Barack Obama helped forge in 2015, Xi said his country would raise its emissions reduction targets with “vigorous policies and measures.” “We aim to have CO2 emissions peak before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060,” he said. Meanwhile, China’s ambassador the UN is calling on the Trump administration to do more in the global fight against climate change. Responding to Trump’s earlier remarks at UNGA, ambassador Zhang Jun called on the U.S. to “do more.” “The United States should be the last one to talk about climate change because of their behavior,” he said. “They are the one who has not ratified the Kyoto Protocol, they are the one who has pulled out (of) the Paris agreement; they are the one who are disassociating itself from the international efforts in climate change,” Zhang continued. “They may wish to be great, but to be great, you have to behave like a leader,” he said. Many countries have pledged they will aim to go carbon neutral by 2050, including the European Union. The United States has so far not set such a goal. President Trump, who once describing climate change as a hoax invented by China, has started the process of pulling the U.S. out of the Paris accord.
