UN Peacekeeping: Harnessing the power of people to secure peace, progress and prosperity

United Nations published this video item, entitled “UN Peacekeeping: Harnessing the power of people to secure peace, progress and prosperity” – below is their description.

Every day, United Nations peacekeepers work to protect hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people in the world’s most fragile political and security situations. The theme for this year’s International Day of UN Peacekeepers is: People. Peace. Progress. The Power of Partnerships.

Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix explains why peacekeeping is a collective endeavour that requires the support of many partners, including community leaders, women and youth, civil society, host governments, Troop and Police Contributing Countries and Member States.

“More than one million women and men have served as United Nations peacekeepers around the world.

Driven by a shared commitment to peace, they have shown true professionalism and courage in overcoming immense challenges to help end conflict and build peace over the past 74 years.

Today is the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

It is an opportunity to thank all our uniformed and civilian personnel for their service and sacrifice.

And to remember and honor the more than 4000 peacekeepers who have sadly lost their lives in the cause of peace.

Around the world, peacekeepers continue to work in very difficult and dangerous conditions.

Their safety and security remains our top priority as they continue to face COVID-19, complex, rapidly evolving political and security situations and the increasing threat posed by mis-and-disinformation, which also puts the communities they serve at risk.

Despite these challenges, our peacekeepers persevere.

We are not alone in our endeavour.

Right beside us, in the collective pursuit of peace, are community leaders, women and youth, civil society, host governments, Troop and Police Contributing Countries, Member States, as well as many other regional and international stakeholders.

We thank them for their support by commemorating this day under the theme “People. Peace. Progress – The Power of Partnerships”.

Standing alone, we can never succeed.

But together, we are strong and changing lives for the better.

So please join us, at UN Peacekeeping, to unite and take action to achieve peace, progress, and prosperity for all peoples”.
