UN mission admits deadly shooting in Congo border post

Al Jazeera English published this video item, entitled “UN mission admits deadly shooting in Congo border post” – below is their description.

The UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo has admitted its troops killed people during a gun battle on the border with Uganda.

The head of the mission says soldiers were returning from leave when they opened fire at a border crossing.

The violence came just days after three peacekeepers and 15 protesters were killed during anti-UN demonstrations in North Kivu province.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN under-secretary-general for peace operations, visited Congo on Saturday, where he held talks with Congolese authorities aimed at avoiding a recurrence of the tragic incidents.

The UN mission in Congo is facing criticism for its perceived ineffectiveness at stopping fighting in the volatile east.

Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi reports.
