Speaking to reporters today (05 Feb) in New York, Guterres called on “all members of the Dialogue and the Libyan and international stakeholders to respect the results of the votes.”

He congratulated the three new members of the Presidential Council and the Prime Minister Designate on their selection, and also he wished them “every success in their mandates to lead the country for the reminder of the preparatory phase leading up to the national elections on the 24th of December 2021.”

Guterres welcomed the pledges made by the new executive authority to form a new government reflecting political pluralism, geographical representation and its commitment to include no less than 30 percent of women in executive positions, as well as to ensure the participation of youth.

He also called on the new executive authority and all concerned Libyan stakeholders to “uphold the principles and timelines set outs in the Tunis roadmap.”

The UN chief thanked the members of the Political Dialogue for “successfully shouldering this historic responsibility.”

He said, “my appreciation also extends to the government of Switzerland for hosting the LPDF, to the members for the polling process for their continue support and to acting special representative Stephanie Williams for her leadership, commitment, and tireless effort in facilitating the inter-Libyan dialogue.”

Guterres reiterated, “the United Nations commitment to support Libyan people in their efforts to build a peaceful and prosperous country will continue,” adding that after the ceasefire that was agreed, “the election that now took place shows that Libya is moving in the right direction.”

Members of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) elected today a three-member Presidency Council led by Mohammad Younes Menfi and Abdul Hamid Mohammed Dbeibah as the country’s Prime Minister.
