Israel and Hamas edged closer to a cease-fire as the two sides weighed proposals to end their 11-day conflict in which more than 200 people have died.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened Israel’s security cabinet on Thursday evening to discuss a possible cessation of hostilities, an Israeli official said on condition of anonymity to discuss the government’s plans. U.S. and Egyptian leaders spoke about the conflict, while officials at the United Nations pressed for a rapid end to the violence.

Israeli’s government told Egyptian mediators that it intends to stop its military operation, Al Jazeera reported, citing an unidentified person. Al Jazeera didn’t include a time frame for the end of the attacks, although a separate report from Israel’s Channel 13, citing an unidentified Hamas official, said the truce was scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Friday.
