ABC News (Australia) published this video item, entitled “UN accuses Myanmar of using death penalty to crush dissent | The World” – below is their description.
The United Nations has accused the military junta in Myanmar of using the death penalty as a political tool to crush their opposition. At least seven students who took part in anti-regime protests were sentenced to death last week, in closed trials at Yangon’s notorious Insein Prison. With an estimated 90 people in custody on death row and the shock execution of four men in July, advocates are concerned that more people could soon be put to death. Activist Sophia Sarkis tells The World the international community needs to put more pressure on the junta.
