With war raging on fronts to the east and south, the summer of 2022 is proving a bitter one for the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. The sun shines but sadness and grim determination reign.
Kyiv repelled Russia’s initial invasion force, but the peace in the capital is deceptive.
On Venice Beach, the name given to an inviting stretch of sand on the majestic Dnipro River that courses through the city, the scene looks summery enough but this summer is also bittersweet, as more soldiers head to the battlefield.

Overlooking the Dnieper River is the Kiev Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, a Christian pilgrimage site housing Scythian tomb relics and catacombs containing mummified Orthodox monks.
