The Conservative Party have gained the seat of Basildon South & Thurrock East in the 2010 UK General Election. The seat had been held by the Labour Party. Conservative candidate Stephen Metcalfe claimed a large majority of 5,772 votes, as all candidates gained from 2005, except Labour, who lost 9.7% from the last election.

The Conservatives gained 5.3% on their 2005 vote: they won with 43.9% of the popular vote in Basildon South & Thurrock East.

Voting is a method for a group, such as a meeting or an electorate, in order to make a collective decision or express an opinion usually following discussions, debates or election campaigns. Democracies elect holders of high office by voting. Residents of a place represented by an elected official are called “constituents”, and those constituents who cast a ballot for their chosen candidate are called “voters”.
