U-turn as secondary pupils advised to wear face coverings in lockdown areas | ITV News

The government has said right from the start of this incredibly tiresome pandemic that it is following the science in dealing with it.

And indeed they are saying as much tonight about their sudden decision to tell pupils of some schools in England that they are going to need to wear a face mask when they go back.

In essence, if you are in an area where there are local restrictions, like the north west of England, then you’ll be wearing a mask in corridors and communal areas at school.

Anywhere else, headteachers can bring them in, if they want.

So perhaps that’s clear.

The World Health Organisation advice has changed, ministers say. And thus so too has their decision.

But they have been accused of just following Scotland, or public opinion and Labour says parents and teachers need clarity and leadership, not a half baked U-turn.
