Five US lawmakers met with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen on Friday during their visit to Taipei to reaffirm Washington’s support for the island.

The visit is the third one by US lawmakers this year and comes just days after President Joe Biden invited Taiwan to a planned democracy summit.

The invite led to an angry rebuke from Beijing which, in recent years has stepped up military and political pressure on Taiwan to accept its sovereignty claims.

The political status of Taiwan is complicated. The Republic of China (ROC) is no longer a member of the UN, having been replaced by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1971. Taiwan is claimed by the PRC, which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognise the ROC. Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 14 out of 193 UN member states and the Holy See.
