South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “U.K. breaks daily Covid-19 record as Omicron likely to become dominant strain in E.U. by mid-January” – below is their description.
Britain reported 78,610 Covid-19 cases on December 15, 2021, the highest daily infection rate since the start of the pandemic. The UK government expects the number of infections and hospitalisations to continue rising, but it does not plan to roll out further restrictions for now. On the European mainland, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the new coronavirus variant Omicron will become the dominant strain in the 27-nation bloc by mid-January 2022. Across Europe, countries have begun adopting new measures with Germany, Spain, Greece and Hungary starting to vaccinate children ages five-11. First reported in South Africa on November 24, Omicron has since spread to more than 77 countries as of December 16.
