Two bodies were retrieved and about 20 people remain missing on Saturday after a massive mudslide tore into the Japanese city of Atami, southwest of Tokyo. The deluge of debris and mud, triggered by torrential rain, destroyed at least 10 houses in the resort town known for its hot springs. The disaster occurred at about 10:30 a.m. local time in the city in Shizuoka Prefecture as heavy rainfall swept areas along the Pacific coast in central and eastern Japan. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has held talks with disaster minister Yasufumi Tanahashi over the mudslide and other calamities associated with the rain.
