Turkey’s parliament has passed a controversial social media law – which rights groups say will give the government a greater power to increase online censorship.
Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter will be required to have local representatives in Turkey.
They will also need to store the user data inside the country, making it easier for authorities to access.
Companies that break the law could be fined or effectively blocked.
Opponents say Turkish authorities will be able to “censor” social media after parliament passed a new law to regulate foreign platforms.
The government says the legislation is needed to prevent cybercrime, but the opposition alleges it could be used to stifle political dissent and criticism.
