Despite appeals by medical health experts to avoid large gatherings, United States President Donald Trump hosted an event at the White House to mark Independence Day.
President Trump has vowed to defeat the “radical left” in a July Fourth Independence Day speech, condemning recent efforts to remove or rethink monuments to historical figures as attempts to destroy the US.
Hundreds later turned out in Washington, DC to watch a fireworks display.
In the US, the states of Florida and Texas saw a record rise in daily infections.
Other parts of the country also saw big jumps in the number of new cases.
