President Donald Trump declared an economic “emergency” Friday and instructed agencies to waive laws and speed approval for projects like mines, highways, and pipelines.
The executive order undermines the Endangered Species Act and the National Environmental Policy Act.
The EPA also finalized a rulemaking it harder for states, tribes and the public to block pipelines and projects that could pollute waterways. It’s unclear how individual projects are affected, as some developers are wary of legal challenges.
Trump also opened a marine sanctuary off the Maine coast to commercial fishing.
