The 2020 US election map is gradually being filled in as votes cast on November 3, 2020, are tallied up by individual states and counties are marked red where Republican Party candidates took the most votes and blue where Democrats prevailed. But as of November 5, counting was still under way since many Americans opted to cast votes by mail because of concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. Electoral officials had warned in advance that tight races could appear to shift as these mail-in ballots were tallied, but US President Donald Trump and his Republican Party supporters have denounced figures coming in that showed his Democratic challenger Joe Biden leading or gaining ground. The Trump campaign, Republican candidates and others have multiple lawsuits, claiming that the system is broken or that there were fraudulent mail-in ballots cast. Election officials and observers said there has been no evidence to support such claims. Biden has called for calm and for every vote to be counted. As local election officials continue to tally up the votes, what is becoming clear is that while Americans turned out in record numbers, the nation remains sharply divided politically.
