The United States has now recorded more than half a million deaths from COVID-19 – by far the highest toll in the world.

It was just over a year ago that the country recorded its first fatality. And despite efforts to ramp up vaccinations, about 2,000 Americans are still dying every single day.

“Today, we mark a truly heartbreaking milestone – 500,071 dead,” US President Joe Biden said after a moment of silence was observed on Monday evening at the White House, which was lighted by hundreds of candles representing those who have died.
