Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Tuesday he had asked Gov. Gen. Julie Payette to prorogue parliament and would return Sept. 23 for the Speech from the Throne.
Given the COVID-19 pandemic, Trudeau and his new finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, both said they want to present a plan on how to restart the economy and “build back better,” when the pandemic ends. Asked about why he decided to prorogue parliament, despite the 2015 Liberal campaign platform said they would not prorogue government, Trudeau said that while they were doing so they would return with a Speech from the Throne and “force” a confidence vote on their plan going forward.
Trudeau also addressed the resignation of former finance minister Bill Morneau and said he had worked “tirelessly” over the past four years and would continue to make contributions to Canada in the years to come. The prime minister dodged questions on whether he had asked Morneau to resign, instead saying they needed a new team focused on both the present and future in terms of rebuilding the economy following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new finance minister also spoke about becoming Canada’s first female federal finance minister, saying she’s conscious of that fact and that “it’s about time we broke that glass ceiling,” and encouraged women across Canada to continue breaking their own. She also said she’s glad she has the experience as a woman and mother to the job, saying that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, women’s participation in the workforce has fallen “sharply” and is hitting mothers “hard.”
