Justin Trudeau appointed Canada’s first-ever Indigenous governor general ahead of an expected election call this year.

Queen Elizabeth II has approved the prime minister’s recommendation of Inuit leader Mary Simon for the post, Trudeau told reporters Tuesday.

Born in Nunavik, in Quebec’s Arctic region, Simon spent four decades promoting Indigenous rights in various posts, including as head of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami. She also previously served as Canada’s ambassador to Denmark.
