Trudeau, Governor General take part in Canada Day celebrations in nation’s capital | LIVE

Global News published this video item, entitled “Trudeau, Governor General take part in Canada Day celebrations in nation’s capital | LIVE” – below is their description.

After two years without in-person Canada Day celebrations due to COVID-19, festivities are set to return, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Governor General Mary Simon attending as guest speakers in Ottawa.

The nation’s capital is bracing for a Canada Day set to draw large crowds after two years of virtual celebrations — just months after an unprecedented illegal demonstration that police say is still causing “lingering trauma” among Ottawa residents.

In normal years, Canada Day festivities draw thousands to the lawns and streets around Parliament Hill for concerts, fireworks, and parties. COVID-19 forced celebrations to be virtual instead, in 2020 and 2021.

This year, the party is back live and in-person after two years of lockdowns, but it won’t be taking place against the familiar backdrop of the parliamentary precinct.

Instead, official celebrations will be based at LeBreton Flats, the festival grounds roughly a 20-minute walk west of Parliament Hill, as the parliamentary precinct battens down after some of the “Freedom Convoy” blockade organizers vowed to return to the capital on Friday. Police and the public are bracing for the possibility of those protesters staying through the weekend.

In This Story: Freedom Convoy

A series of ongoing protests and blockades in Canada against COVID-19 vaccine mandates and restrictions, called the Freedom Convoy by organizers, broke out in early 2022. The convoy was created to protest vaccine mandates for crossing the United States border, but became a protest about COVID-19 mandates in general.

There has been a lot of interest in these protests, in particular from American and broadly right-wing or centre-right media outlets. The numbers of participants has been widely exaggerated by these outlets, while the original spike of protesters present was certainly numbered in thousands at the end of January, this number quickly dwindled to a hard core or participants numbered in hundreds, who have remained in place until the middle of February 2022.
