7NEWS Australia published this video item, entitled “Transport unions call for ‘AviationKeeper’ welfare payments for employees | 7NEWS” – below is their description.
Aviation workers have testified before a Senate inquiry about the ongoing viability of employment in a sector which has been decimated by the coronavirus pandemic.
Many employed by the industry fear they will lose their jobs without an extension of the JobKeeper subsidy.
The Transport Workers Union (TWU) warns jobs within the sector will “fall off a cliff” when the scheme comes to an end within the next few weeks.
The union is calling on Prime Minister Scott Morrison to announce “AviationKeeper” to keep the industry afloat.
TWU Assistant National Secretary Nick McIntosh said, “this government … has a choice as to whether it will do the right thing by aviation workers and the aviation industry”.
