For the first time ever the German parliament, the Bundestag, dedicated its annual ceremony of remembrance for the victims of the National Socialist regime to people targeted due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. During the Nazi regime, tens of thousands of people were imprisoned and murdered under laws that criminalized homosexuality. Nyke Slawik, one of the two openly transgender members of the German parliament, praised the ceremony – but also says the fight for equality isn’t over.
