Australia joins the U.S. in opposing China’s “control” of the South China Sea. In a filing to the United Nations last week, Canberra said there was no “legal basis” for Beijing’s claims. The filing appears to reverse Australia’s policy of encouraging claimants to settle disputes under international law. So what’s behind this sudden change of heart? And why is Australia wading into affairs so far from its borders?
