    If Nicola Sturgeon’s Scottish National Party does well in next week’s elections for the Scottish Parliament it could increase demands, not least from her, for another independence referendum.

    When the Scottish Parliament was set up, in 1999, it was never supposed to lead to this – at least not in the eyes of one of its original architects.

    The former Labour prime minister Tony Blair admitted to ITV News on Tuesday that he made a mistake in believing devolution would see off independence.

    Things have not turned out the way he hoped.
