This summer, the most unusual and delayed #Olympics in history rolled out. And yet, despite COVID-19 concerns, China has forged ahead, widening the lead on the gold medal tally. In joy and tears, millions of Chinese cheer for the national teams on social media. They also cheered athletes who came up with whatever they could but finished short on medals due to injuries or other reasons. Four hundred and thirty-one Chinese athletes are taking part in the games, from fresh faces in shooting and swimming to the old familiar ones. Ma Long, the 33-year-old table tennis player, won his historic second straight Olympic gold in the men’s singles, and #SuBingtian, a 32-year-old sprinter, set a new Asian record. For them, age is just a number. China also broke new ground in sports with no traditional advantages, for example, in women’s rugby, windsurfing and track and field. So, what do these Summer Games, held in rather troubled times, mean for this crop of athletes and global #sports fans?
