Now in the 50th year of their diplomatic ties, China and the Maldives represent a model of “mutual productive partnership” between a big and a small economy. In this exclusive interview with the Maldives Ambassador to China, Aishath Azeema, The Hub with Wang Guan looks at the reciprocity in the relationship. In the early days of the pandemic, fishing nation the Maldives sent one million cans of tuna “packed with love and friendship” to China to show solidarity. China, in turn, sent vaccines and medical supplies. The China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, a flagship project under the Belt and Road Initiative, has “changed people’s lives” in the Maldives along with other Chinese-built infrastructure projects. And the two nations share the same concerns about climate change, with both making new policies to cope with the fallout.
