Thousands participated in a Gay Pride march in Mexico City on Saturday.

Some said they wanted to commemorate the people who had “participated and died due to violence and discrimination.”

In past decades, Mexico has passed laws in recognition of LGBT rights, such as same sex marriage, adoption, and change of sex.

Northern states such as Sinaloa and Baja California approved same sex marriage less than a month ago. But many other states have not taken steps in the same direction.

Mexico City government buildings, facing towards the city cathedral, were draped in the Rainbow and Trans Pride flags to help mark the celebrations.
