Thousands of #migrants and refugees massed at #Turkey’s western frontier Sunday, trying to enter #Greece by land and sea after Turkey declared its borders were open to migrants hoping to enter the European Union.
Many huddled against the cold late Sunday as darkness fell at the Pazarkule border crossing west of Istanbul, and further south at Ayvacik opposite the Greek island of Lesbos.
The United Nations reported at least 13,000 people had gathered on Turkey’s land border by Saturday night, the vast majority apparently from Afghanistan.

Afghanistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country at the crossroads of Central and South Asia. Afghanistan is bordered by Pakistan to the east and south; Iran to the west; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan to the north; and China to the northeast.

Major landmarks include the Eiffel Tower, the 12th-century, Gothic Notre-Dame cathedral and the Arc de Triomphe on the Champs-Élysées.

Istanbul, which straddles Europe and Asia, is the country’s largest city, while Ankara is the capital. The majority of the population identifies as Turkish, around 20% identify as Kurdish.
