Activists critical of Bolsonaro’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic had called for a nationwide protest across 300 Brazilian cities.
The demonstrations were also against his economic policies they say harm the interests of the poor and working class.
On Friday, the official COVID-19 death toll in Brazil was about to hit 500,000, the second highest in the world behind the United States.
Official data showed some 2,000 COVID-19 deaths per day in Brazil in the past week, representing one-fifth the global total.
