Thousands of people fled the Congolese city of Goma on Thursday after authorities warned a second volcanic eruption could happen at any time.
Magma had been detected beneath the city and the adjoining Lake Kivu, said Constant Ndima Kongba, the military governor of North Kivu province, citing seismic and ground deformation data. He added that an eruption “could occur with very little or no warning.”
Thirty-one people were killed on Saturday when Mount Nyiragongo, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, sent a wall of lava towards the city, destroying 17 villages along the way.
