This Couple is Fighting the Coronavirus Side by Side in Wuhan

Emergency room nurse Li Ting caught the coronavirus while working on the frontline. Her husband Hai Tang has been taking care of her and documenting her battle at home.

Health authorities around the world are on high alert as an outbreak of Covid-19, a pneumonia-like illness, has spread from the Chinese city of Wuhan to 67 countries and territories—affecting every continent— in the course of a month. It has shuttered cities as far away as in Italy, shaken financial markets and caused airlines to cancel flights globally. On Feb. 27, the head of the World Health Organization said the outbreak has the potential to become a pandemic.

The new coronavirus that causes Covid-19—renamed SARS-CoV-2—is thought to have spread from a food market in the central China metropolis that’s home to more than 11 million people. The large majority of cases and deaths have been in mainland China, but that trend is changing as new hot spots pop up in South Korea, Italy and Iran. So far, there have been 132 deaths linked to the virus outside mainland China: in Iran, Italy, South Korea, Japan, France, Hong Kong, the U.S., Australia, the Philippines, Thailand and Taiwan.

In This Story: Hong Kong

Hong Kong, officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China (HKSAR), is a metropolitan area and special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China on the eastern Pearl River Delta of the South China Sea. With over 7.5 million residents of various nationalities in a 1,104-square-kilometre (426 sq mi) territory, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world.

Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after the Qing Empire ceded Hong Kong Island at the end of the First Opium War in 1842. The colony expanded to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 after the Second Opium War and was further extended when Britain obtained a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898. The whole territory was transferred to China in 1997. As a special administrative region, Hong Kong maintains separate governing and economic systems from that of mainland China under the principle of “one country, two systems”.

Iran, also called Persia, officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, is a country in Western Asia. Its central location in Eurasia and proximity to the Strait of Hormuz give it significant geostrategic importance. Tehran is the capital and largest city.

Iran is home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations, beginning with the formation of the Elamite kingdoms in the fourth millennium BC. The Iranian Revolution established the current Islamic Republic in 1979.

Iran’s political system combines elements of a presidential democracy and an Islamic theocracy. Iran is a founding member of the UN, ECO, OIC, and OPEC. It is a major regional and middle power and has large reserves of fossil fuels — including the world’s largest natural gas supply and the third largest proven oil reserves.

The country’s rich cultural legacy is reflected in part by its 22 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Historically a multi-ethnic country, Iran remains a pluralistic society comprising numerous ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups, the largest being Persians, Azeris, Kurds, Mazandaranis and Lurs.
