‘These days you don’t live in Haiti, you just try not to die’ | Anti-crime protest ends in violence

Protests continue to erupt in Port-au-Prince over rising crime in the community and government corruption.

Haiti’s National Network for the Defense of Human Rights logged 54 murders in the capital in May and June alone. Around 200 people gathered in front of the justice ministry to call for the government to take action. Police fired tear gas and shots into the air to disperse the crowd, receiving some projectiles thrown back at them. Just a week before, police chased protesters trying to perform a sit-in in front of the ministry, and even tore up all the banners from the demo. One demonstrator told the press, ‘These days, you don’t live in Haiti, you just try not to die.’
