Channel 4 News published this video item, entitled “The women living in fear in the countryside who are campaigning for change” – below is their description.

Warning: This report contains descriptions of sexual assault and violence

Since the death of Sarah Everard there’s been something of a national reckoning of how safe women feel walking alone on Britain’s streets.

But many of the converstions have focused on cities, yet for women living in smaller towns or the countryside also say they often feel unsafe.

They say cost cutting on things like street lighting shouldn’t come at the cost of them feeling too scared to leave the house. Warning: There are descriptions of a sexual nature in this report.

Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old marketing executive, left a friend’s home in the Clapham neighborhood of London at 9 p.m. on March 3 2021. She never arrived at her Brixton home, some 50 minutes walk away. It was later discovered she had been kidnapped, raped and murdered by an off duty Metropolitan Police officer, Wayne Couzens, who, after his arrest in June, in July 2021 pleaded guilty to all three offences, and was imprisoned for life without parole.
