United Nations published this video item, entitled “THE UN TODAY: ALARM AND HOPE AS LEADERS MEET” – below is their description.

“The world must wake up,” United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged leaders gathered for their annual debate at UN Headquarters in New York. With some participating virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Secretary-General cautioned that humanity is on “the edge of an abyss” but saw hope in the power of multilateral action.

“We’re back at the table in international forums, especially the United Nations, to focus attention and to spur global action on shared challenges,” announced United States President Joseph R. Biden.

Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi pledged to stay true to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the country’s nuclear programme.

Zuzana Čaputová, President of the Slovak Republic, called for action to stop gender-based violence. They were among dozens of leaders taking part in the general debate, which will continue through 27 September.
