A flight carrying asylum seekers was stopped from departing the UK last week at the last minute. They were the first batch of refugees the UK deemed “inadmissible” who were to be offshored to Rwanda in a new bilateral deal. But the United Nations and the European Court of Human Rights, together with human rights advocacy groups, have strongly criticized the deal for treating refugees like commodities. Why has the UK insisted on such a controversial policy? Why has it drawn strong objections? And are the criticisms warranted?
