Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is undergoing exponential growth and transformation at breakneck speed. But how can we ensure it develops in a way that benefits humanity without unforeseen risks? On November 16, China released a Position Paper on Strengthening Ethical Governance of AI at a United Nations meeting in Geneva, making clear to the world for the first time China’s vision and principles of the global governance of AI. China says it finds it important to enhance the understanding of all countries on AI ethics, and ensure that AI is safe, reliable and controllable. What exactly is China’s vision for ethical AI? And how is it different or similar to Western concepts? What is China’s position on individual privacy and data security?

Prof. Zeng Yi, Chinese Academy of Sciences; also member of National Governance Committee of New Generation AI
