In an interview with CGTN’s Zou Yue, Rod Campbell, research director at the Australian Institute, revealed how coordinated campaigns that spread rumors against China work on social media. Campbell is the co-author of a report entitled “Like a Virus: The Coordinated Spread of Coronavirus Disinformation,” which identifies that numerous automated accounts or “bot” accounts were spreading conspiracy theories on social media by saying that the coronavirus is a bioweapon created by China. Campbell also said the point of coordinated campaigns was to bring something from the extremist fringe into the mainstream. He warned the danger of the harmful misinformation.
